Exclamation marks

The exclamation mark is used to end sentences that express:

  • an exclamation
  • direct speech that represents something shouted or spoken very loudly
  • something that amuses the writer

Exclamation marks are often used in informal writing such as emails or when advertising something, but you should avoid using them in formal writing. Never use more than one at the end of a sentence. If in doubt, use a full stop instead.
