Groups

The first letter of each word in the names of groups, organisations, and departments should be written in uppercase, except for linking words such as and, for, and of, which should be in lowercase.

  • Department for Education
  • University of the West of England
  • Department of Modern Languages and European Studies

In the middle of a sentence the word the, which normally precedes the name of a group, organisation or department, should be written with an uppercase T, if the word the forms part of the official or legal name. For example, the official university name is The University of Sheffield or University of Southampton.

  • There are still vacancies for history at The University of Sheffield.
  • The open days at the University of Southampton are in September.

Shortened names

When referring to a group, organisation, or department for the first time, the full name should be used, but a shortened reference can be used throughout the remainder of the document.

UCAS and its associated bodies

When using a shortened reference for UCAS or for UCAS' departments, sections, units, groups, or committees, the first letter of each word in the general reference, except for any linking words, should be in uppercase. For example,

The UCAS Board met on 4 May 2016. Unfortunately, many members of the Board were unable to attend.

UCAS business units

When referring to a business unit in UCAS, the first reference should be the full title below (including ampersands). If appropriate it can then be abbreviated for any other reference.
